In front of the museum is a statue of Enriquillo, also called Guarocuya, the Indian chief of the area Jaragua. He led the great rebellion in 1522 against the Spaniards and obtained an agreement in 1533 with some rights for the Indians. He succumbed tragically to tuberculosis in 1535, they say that his remains rest in the church of Santa María in Azua. (2002) |
