Santo Domingo de Guzmán, the capital of the Dominican Republic, founded by the governor Don Bartolomé Colón the 4th of august 1496, has now 3 million inhabitants.

This old city gate "Puerte del Conde" is named after governor Conde de Peñalva, who
in 1655 has defended the city with succes against an english attack. The gate is
situated at the beginning of the shopping street "El Conde" and gives access to the Park
of the Independence, "Parque Independencia", the center of the city. |

National Park of the Three Eyes:
"Parque Nacional de los Tres Ojos" is situated east of the river Ozama. "Tres Ojos" refers to the presence of three underground fresh-water lakes, three eyes of water. |

The botanical garden, "Jardín Botánico Nacional Dr. Rafael M. Moscoso", is the biggest in the Caribbean and named after the prominent dominican botanist. |

road "27 de febrero" (february), when you leave the town southward, for instance
to Azua. A big and busy traffic circus. |

This is the National Theatre, where I've seen Michel Camilo playing, a famous dominican jazz-pianist who, for exemple, plays many times at the famous North Sea jazz-festival in The Hague, Holland. |

A typical building in Santo Domingo. In the language of the people it's called "Huacal" (bottle crate), because it lookes like stacked bottle crates. Officially the building is called "Juan Pablo Duarte", address: Av. Mexico with Leopoldo Navarro. It houses government offices, including the Ministry of Interior and Police and the Ministry of Public Administration. (2000)
